A dropshipping niche is a small range of products sourced from dropshipping suppliers to sell through your own online store.
The dropshipping industry is projected to reach $1.35 trillion by 2031, and there are multiple dropshipping niches to choose from. John Murphy, for example, built a $3 million dropshipping business by niching down to sell e-bikes to hunters.
“It was very scary in the beginning, cutting out over 90% of my potential customers,” John says in a Shopify Masters interview. “[But] it was absolutely game changing for me because everything became easier—marketing, email, the messaging on the website—all focused on how an ebike is going to elevate your hunt. And then hunters really were drawn to it.”
If you want to open a dropshipping store for a specific target market but aren’t sure where to start, use this guide to determine the best dropshipping niche for you.
What is a dropshipping niche?
A dropshipping niche is a specialized segment of a market that can be served by dropshipped products. Examples of dropshipping niches include: fitness accessories, eco-friendly pet supplies, or home office furniture.
Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where a store doesn’t stock its products. Instead, when the store makes a sale, it purchases the item from a third party, which ships it directly to the customer on the store’s behalf.
The challenge is that the dropshipping industry is highly competitive. “If there are more than 25 or 30 stores already selling, the market might already be too saturated,” John says.
A niche helps because you can build a brand reputation around a specific range of products. A Shopify survey* of store owners found brand reputation was the second-most cited competitive advantage at 43%.
“The more types of customers you try to serve, the less distinctive your brand becomes,” says Thousand founder Gloria Hwang in a Shopify Masters interview.
How to find a dropshipping niche
Here are some dropshipping tips to help you find the right niche:
Check for growing or steady demand
Use Google Trends data and free keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner to track market demand. Keyword research shows how many people search for products in the dropshipping niche you’re considering.
Evaluate the competition
Review bestseller lists on Amazon, eBay, and Etsy to review other sellers in that niche and combine with your own audience research. “The deeper you go with your core customers, the more you learn that nobody else sees,” says Gloria. “Competitors who spread themselves too thin can’t access those kinds of insights.”
Think about complementary products
Encourage customers to spend more by bundling together similar products from the same niche. For example, you could dropship shampoo, conditioner, wax, and cleaning cloths in one car cleaning bundle.
Consider repeat purchase potential
Repeat customers drive 300% more revenue than first-time shoppers. Explore niches that lend themselves to repeat purchases, like toothbrushes or skin care products, using ad pixels and retargeting to bring people back if you’re in a narrow niche.
Look for passionate buyers
Ali Osterholz built an Instagram community for her brand, Explorer Knits + Fibers.
“People found [our page] because of my excitement about the national parks, nature, and doing what I love most: knitting,” Ali says in a ShopifyMasters interview.
Balance seasonality vs. evergreen products
“You don’t want to go into this dynamic where none of your products sell even though they are evergreen, because competition is high and buyers are finding your products elsewhere with better prices and maybe a better narrative,” says Lucia Cedron, a senior product lead at Shopify.
Source products from trusted dropshipping suppliers
Methods to source niche products from dropshipping suppliers include:
- Shopify Collective: Shopify’s built-in supplier network that lets you sell products from other Shopify brands. Import listings and let Shopify Collective handle order routing and shipping calculations.
- Shopify Product Network: Display products from other retailers on your website and earn commission when customers buy them. Order details flow back to the retailer who will ship it directly to your customer.
- Dropshipping apps: DropCommerce, Syncee, and Zendrop integrate directly with your Shopify store to automate inventory updates and order processing.
- Dropshipping websites: Many sites offer apps as well as stand-alone channels designed to support dropshipping around the globe.
The most profitable dropshipping niches
If you’re exploring a new dropshipping niche, think about your interests, supplier availability, and profit potential.
There are two main types of dropshipping niche. High-ticket dropshipping is where sellers earn money by selling higher margins at less volume. There are also low-ticket options, where individual profit margins are slimmer but sellers make up for it by shipping at higher volumes. Both depend on solid marketing, product-market fit, and dropshipping inventory management.
Here are eight of the top dropshipping niches to consider:
Car accessories
The global interior car accessories market is expected to grow to more than $398.6 billion by 2033. You can start a dropshipping business within this niche by either focusing on inexpensive items (like chargers and car cleaning products) or high-ticket items (like dash cams and cleaning appliances).
Examples of dropshipping products to sell in the car accessories niche include:

How to measure competition in your dropshipping niche
Examine the organically listed (i.e., not advertised) sites on the first page of Google for a specific term to see the competitiveness of your dropshipping niche. For each one, consider:
Number of linking domains
Google’s ranking algorithm relies heavily on links. Backlinko’s 2025 study found the average first-place Google result has 3.8 times more backlinks than those in positions 2 through 10.
The number of unique linking domains shows how many independent sources link to a site and ignores duplicate links from the same domain. You can find this information in a backlink audit using SEO tools like Semrush, Moz, and Ahrefs.
Authority of competing sites
Google also considers the quality of links in search rankings. Browse other sites’ backlink profiles to see which websites link to theirs.
Knowing this upfront gives you an idea of how much work you’ll need to do (in terms of earning and building links to your own site) to outrank your competitors.
One way to build authority and earn backlinks is through quality content from trustworthy sources. Like John learned about marketing ebikes to hunters, niche keyword research and knowing your audience focuses content and brand messaging, making it more effective.
Consider using AI in your dropshipping business to do a competitor content gap analysis. You could also use AI marketing tools to create product imagery with models or in settings specific to your niche.
Qualitative metrics to consider when doing research for your dropshipping store
Think about site quality, usefulness, reputation, and loyalty when doing competitive research for your dropshipping niche:
Site quality and usefulness
Visit the top-ranked sites for a market and put yourself in the shoes of a customer.
Do they appear inviting and welcoming or old and outdated? Are the sites well-organized and easy to navigate with good user experience design, or is it a struggle to even find the search box? Do they provide high-quality information and detailed product listings, or do you have to squint to make out the grainy product images?
Site reputation and customer loyalty
Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if a company has a history of customer complaints. Do a web search to see what people are saying on social media and in online forums and communities. This is known as social listening.
If the top competitors are slacking in the service and satisfaction department, there might be an opening for a store with superior service.
“When there’s a human being and a story behind the brand, people love it that much more,” says cofounder and CEO of Perfectwhitetee Jen Menchaca, in a Shopify Masters interview.
An important note on search results
Google personalizes the search results you see based on your geographic location, your browsing history, and other factors unique to you. When analyzing a market, you need to see unbiased results to be able to understand the real competitive landscape and potential for organic dropshipping.
There are two ways to get around these issues:
- Incognito search. Browse the web “incognito,” so that any personalized settings or browsing history will be discarded and you get an unbiased idea of how sites actually rank.
- Forcing region-specific results. Add a small amount of text to the end of the URL on a Google results page to get country-specific results. For example, if you’re in the UK but want to see the search results being returned for searches in the US, add "&gl=us" to the end of the URL on the search results page and press Enter.
*Based on a 2025 survey of 500 Shopify merchants conducted in English across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United States. Respondents were established merchants with two or moreyears on the platform. Results reflect the experiences of this specific sample and may not be representative of all merchants.

Dropshipping niches FAQ
Which niche is best for dropshipping?
Just as there is no one best marketing tactic or sales tactic, there’s no “best” dropshipping niche. Depending on your goals, resources, and experience, each dropshipping niche has pros and cons. Dropshipping niche examples to consider include:
- Sustainability
- Fashion accessories
- Kitchen and grocery
- Home and bedroom
- Office products
- Camera and cellphone accessories
- Car accessories
- Sports and outdoors
- Child and baby
What is the most profitable dropshipping niche in 2026?
Profit potential depends on more than just the niche you operate in. Consider the suppliers you’re sourcing from, the sales channels you’re using, and how you’ll market your products before choosing a dropshipping niche.
What are the best dropshipping niches for beginners?
There is no best option; the right dropshipping niche depends on your existing skills, experience, and ability to source products from a reputable dropshipping supplier with enough profit margin. If more education would help, there are dropshipping courses for ecommerce entrepreneurs.
Is a niche store better than a general dropshipping store?
Both niche and generalized dropshipping stores have their advantages. However, Thousand founder Gloria Hwang says in a Shopify Masters interview: “Thousand deliberately serves only two: urban travelers and families.
“When you’re pressured to expand and capture more market share, the instinct is to cast a wider net, but that only dilutes what made you special in the first place. … We’d rather go deeper with the customers we understand than spread ourselves thin trying to be everything to everyone.”
Can you make $10,000 a month dropshipping?
A report from TrueProfit found beginners make up to $24,000 per year. It reports entrepreneurs who scale to beyond $10,000 a month have at least six months of experience, higher ad spend, and a stricter focus on profit.
